10th July 2024 – (Hong Kong) An 84-year-old male remand person in custody, held at the Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre, passed away today while receiving medical treatment at a public hospital.
The deceased inmate had been suffering from heart disease, necessitating ongoing medical care and follow-up treatment at both the institution hospital and a public hospital. Due to physical discomfort, he was transferred to a public hospital on July 9 for further treatment. Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated during his hospitalization, and he was pronounced dead at 8:10 am today.
The case has been reported to the Police, who will conduct an investigation. As per standard procedure, a death inquest will be conducted by the Coroner’s Court to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the individual’s passing.
The person in custody had been remanded in December 2023 for the offense of wounding with intent. Details regarding the specific incident leading to his remand have not been disclosed at this time.
The Correctional Services Department (CSD) is responsible for the care and custody of inmates within Hong Kong’s correctional facilities. The department aims to ensure the well-being and safety of all detainees, providing necessary medical attention and treatment when required. However, despite these efforts, unfortunate incidents such as this highlight the challenges faced when dealing with individuals with pre-existing medical conditions.
