12th JUly 2024 – (Hong Kong) Japanese character Doraemon takes centre stage in Hong Kong as the city hosts a grand exhibition starting tomorrow. The event, which unfolds at the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui, offers both free and ticketed zones, catering to an enthusiastic fanbase eager to step into the world of this iconic blue robot cat.
Early this morning, fans were already seen capturing moments at the barricaded outskirts of the exhibition area, which will remain accessible without charge until August 11. The ticketed sections will continue to welcome visitors until August 18. Organisers have also announced an upcoming drone show featuring Doraemon, scheduled for July 20 in Tsim Sha Tsui, with details to follow, reflecting the fervent response to previous similar performances.
Katsuya Hikari, President of FUJIKO PRO and daughter of “Doraemon” creator Fujiko F. Fujio, attended the opening ceremony today. She highlighted Hong Kong’s special place in the hearts of Doraemon enthusiasts and expressed hopes that the exhibition will rekindle cherished memories associated with the series. Hikari’s presence underscores the event’s significance as one of the largest Doraemon exhibitions globally.
Demand for the exhibition has been overwhelming. The ticketed area has already sold out, and the free section’s reservations for the first week reached capacity quickly. Lin Shuxin, a spokesperson for the organisers, mentioned that an additional week had already been added due to high demand, but there are no plans for further extensions. Additionally, more than twenty Doraemon sculptures will be installed at various locations including MTR stations and Ngong Ping 360 for public enjoyment.

This extensive exhibition not only showcases various aspects of the Doraemon universe but also offers a nostalgic journey for the numerous fans who grew up with the character. The strategic choice of Hong Kong as the first stop in this touring exhibition highlights the city’s unique cultural connection with Doraemon.
Visitors to the exhibition can expect a carefully curated experience, blending interactive installations with exclusive merchandise and art pieces. The organisers have ensured that the layout facilitates a smooth flow of visitors, preserving the quality of the experience despite the expected large crowds.
