11th July 2024 – (Moscow) The Kremlin has expressed its concerns over the expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) into Ukraine, stating that it poses an “unacceptable threat” to Russia’s security. Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Kremlin, made these remarks on Thursday in response to a joint declaration issued at the NATO summit in Washington the previous day, which asserted that “Ukraine’s future is in NATO.”
Peskov highlighted that the alliance’s involvement in the Ukrainian conflict is a reality and emphasised that NATO’s military infrastructure is gradually encroaching upon Russia’s borders. He reiterated Russia’s long-standing position, stating, “From the very beginning, we said that NATO expansion into the territory of Ukraine is an unacceptable threat to us, our existence, our security.”
According to Peskov, the measures adopted at the summit compel Russia to take appropriate steps to counterbalance the bloc, as it perceives NATO’s actions as potentially jeopardizing its national security. The Kremlin spokesperson added, “This will require us to form thoughtful, coordinated, and effective response measures to contain NATO.”
