12th July 2024 – (Tehran) Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, dismissed the allegations made by NATO leaders that Tehran was providing military assistance to Moscow in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In response to a joint declaration issued at the conclusion of a NATO summit in Washington, Kanaani released a statement rejecting the claim.
NATO had accused Iran, along with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, of offering direct military support to Russia, thereby exacerbating the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, Kanaani deemed these assertions as “completely baseless and politically motivated,” refusing to entertain any suggestion of a connection between the Ukrainian war and Iran-Russia cooperation.
Kanaani emphasized Iran’s unwavering commitment to promoting sustainable stability and security in the region and globally. He reiterated that Iran had never supplied Russia with drones for use against Ukraine, firmly denying any involvement in the conflict.
Furthermore, Kanaani affirmed Iran’s stance on the Ukraine crisis, advocating for a political resolution and the establishment of lasting peace. Despite accusations from Ukraine and certain Western countries alleging Iran’s export of suicide drones and other weaponry to Russia for use in the conflict, Iran has consistently refuted these claims, labeling them as baseless. The country clarified that it had merely provided a limited number of drones to Russia months prior to the commencement of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
