18th January 2025 – (Melbourne) Defending champion Jannik Sinner has confidently progressed to the round of 16 at the Australian Open, securing a straightforward victory over 46th-ranked American player Marcos Giron. The match, held at Rod Laver Arena, concluded with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in just two hours and one minute, marking it as the shortest match for Sinner in the tournament thus far.
This victory contrasts sharply with Sinner’s previous encounters, where he required over two hours and 40 minutes to clinch wins in the first two rounds. “I still have room to improve, I feel like, but every win is great,” Sinner remarked on court after his match. He acknowledged the need to elevate his performance as the tournament progresses, stating, “If I want to go on in this tournament, I have to improve.”
Sinner set the tone early, racing to a 3-0 lead in a mere nine minutes and comfortably taking the first set in 34 minutes after converting his first set point with an ace. He maintained control throughout, breaking Giron’s serve twice in each of the subsequent sets. Although Giron managed to break Sinner’s serve once to level the score in the third set, he could not sustain the momentum as Sinner responded with four consecutive games to seal the match.
