18th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) Kwun Tong Promenade is evolving into a popular evening destination for Generation Z, with some dubbing it “Lan Kwai Fong 2.0” on social media platform Threads. The area has gained notoriety for events such as “Free Hugs” and “Free Kisses” during festive celebrations, alongside reports of potential drug use and public indecency, which have been highlighted by local YouTubers.
In response to a rise in youth-related violent crimes since late last year, the Kwun Tong Police District has ramped up patrols in the area. From November 1, 2024, to January 15, 2025, there were six reported criminal incidents at the promenade, five of which involved organised crime and violence, all of which have been resolved without any links to drugs or sexual offences. The police conducted 642 anti-crime patrols during this period, issued 12 fines for smoking violations, and escorted five minors back to their guardians.
To further deter youth crime and anti-social behaviour, the police have launched an operation dubbed “Operation Climb” this month. This initiative focuses on high-profile patrols, both in uniform and plain clothes, while enhancing cooperation with various government departments to address issues such as illegal smoking and littering in the park.
On the night of January 17, over 90 officers from various units conducted inspections at the promenade, utilising rapid testing kits to screen for suspected drug users. During the operation, 154 individuals were stopped and questioned, resulting in fines for 12 people for smoking in prohibited areas.
The police are committed to maintaining safety at Kwun Tong Promenade, taking necessary measures to protect minors and ensuring compliance with public regulations. They urge residents to respect the law and adhere to guidelines regarding public activities, including prohibitions on smoking and littering.
