12th July 2024 – (Vancouver) An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 was detected off the west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada, on Thursday morning, according to Earthquakes Canada. The seismic event, recorded at precisely 8.08am, forms part of a series of tremors affecting the region, known as a “swarm.”

This cluster of earthquakes is concentrated at the convergence of the northern Juan de Fuca Ridge, the Sovanco Fracture Zone, and the Nootka Fault Zone. Despite the significant magnitude, Emergency Info BC has confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to British Columbia following the quake.

The US Geological Survey initially assessed the earthquake at a slightly higher magnitude of 6.6 but this was later adjusted. The recent activity marks a continuation of seismic events in the area, with approximately ten earthquakes recorded since the start of July. This pattern underscores the ongoing geological volatility along the western Canadian coastline.
