17th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A recent incident on the MTR involving a female passenger, Ms. Tsang, has garnered significant attention following allegations of fare evasion. Last week, after tapping her Octopus card at MTR Yau Tong Station, she was confronted by ticket inspectors who claimed she had “no valid entry record.” This led to a half-hour standoff during which she refused to sign a $1,000 fine, despite threats of police involvement and potential court penalties of up to $5,000. Ultimately, Ms. Tsang paid the fine but subsequently felt wronged, prompting her to seek police assistance.
Initially, MTR representatives stated that their staff suspected improper use of discounted tickets, justifying the ticket inspection. However, the narrative took a turn when MTR personnel later confirmed that Ms. Tsang had indeed been wrongly accused. In a telephone call on 17th January, MTR staff explained that her card had not successfully registered at the entry point, coinciding with another passenger using a discounted ticket, which activated the alert light. They apologised for the misunderstanding and committed to refunding her fine.
Ms. Tsang reported that she entered the station after confirming her balance and seeing the green confirmation arrow, believing her payment had gone through. Following the incident, the MTR clarified that their ticket inspection team had acted on the assumption of potential fare evasion, based on the alert triggered by the other passenger’s ticket.
The MTR highlighted that they received Ms. Tsang’s appeal on 13th January and expedited their review process. They cited a thorough examination of CCTV footage, maintenance records, and the incident details, ultimately validating her claim.
Despite the initial claims and subsequent refund, the incident raises broader questions about the MTR’s ticketing and inspection protocols. The company emphasised its commitment to ensuring fair and just treatment of all passengers while safeguarding the interests of those who comply with fare regulations. As the MTR continues to serve millions of passengers daily, upholding operational integrity and addressing grievances remains paramount in maintaining trust within the community.
