19th January 2025 – (London) Darwin Nunez scored twice in injury time as Liverpool secured a 2-0 victory away to Brentford, reinstating their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League on Saturday.
The match appeared destined for a goalless draw, despite both teams creating opportunities. However, in the first minute of injury time, Nunez capitalised on a low cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold, expertly turning the ball past Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken. Just moments later, he doubled Liverpool’s advantage with a powerful shot following a precise pass from Harvey Elliott, sealing the win for the visitors.
This victory puts pressure on Arsenal, who were set to face Aston Villa later in the day. Arsenal started strongly, with Gabriel Martinelli opening the scoring in the 35th minute after a well-placed pass from Leandro Trossard. Kai Havertz doubled their lead ten minutes into the second half, suggesting a comfortable afternoon for the Gunners.
However, Villa fought back when Youri Tielemans connected with Lucas Digne’s left-wing cross to pull one back. Ollie Watkins then levelled the score at 2-2 in the 68th minute, volleying in Matty Cash’s delivery. Arsenal pressed for a winner, and Mikel Merino thought he had clinched all three points, only for his late goal to be disallowed due to a handball by Havertz in the build-up.
In the early kickoff, Bournemouth emphatically ended Newcastle United’s hopes of a club record tenth consecutive win, with Justin Kluivert scoring a hat-trick in a 4-1 triumph. Kluivert opened the scoring just six minutes in, finishing off a pass from Antoine Semenyo. Though Bruno Guimaraes equalised from a corner, Kluivert restored Bournemouth’s lead before completing his hat-trick late in the game.
Leicester City continued their struggles, suffering a seventh consecutive league defeat with a 2-0 loss at home to Fulham. Harry Wilson played a pivotal role in both goals, providing the assist for Emile Smith Rowe’s header shortly after half-time and later setting up Adama Traore for the second.
Crystal Palace climbed the table with a 2-0 victory over West Ham, thanks to Jean-Philippe Mateta, who scored both goals. Mateta struck first from 25 yards following a long ball from Eberechi Eze before sealing the win from the penalty spot in the 89th minute after being fouled by goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.
