17th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong government has heightened its vigilance towards situations where Hong Kong residents are suspected of being enticed to Southeast Asian countries and unlawfully detained for work. In the wake of a meeting with the Consul-General of Thailand in Hong Kong on 16h January, Chris Tang Ping-keung, the Secretary for Security, engaged in discussions today, with the Consul-General of Myanmar in Hong Kong, underscoring the government’s commitment to addressing cases requiring assistance.
Mr. Tang convened with Mr. Han Win Naing, the Consul-General of Myanmar in Hong Kong, at the consulate premises to present the outcomes of a dedicated task force comprising officials from the Security Bureau, the Hong Kong Police Force, and the Immigration Department. This task force had been dispatched to Thailand earlier to investigate pertinent cases. During the meeting, Mr. Tang and Mr. Han Win Naing exchanged insights, shared intelligence on the matter, and deliberated on fortifying future collaborative efforts. The discussion culminated in a positive reception from Mr. Han Win Naing, with mutual enthusiasm expressed towards aiding more individuals seeking assistance to return safely to Hong Kong expeditiously.
Since August 2022, the Security Bureau established a dedicated task force to oversee coordination among relevant law enforcement agencies in addressing such cases. From 2024 to the present, authorities have received 28 pleas for assistance concerning Hong Kong residents reportedly confined in Southeast Asian nations and unable to depart. Of these cases, seventeen individuals have successfully returned to Hong Kong. The dedicated task force remains committed to pursuing resolution for the remaining eleven cases, continuing its support and intervention efforts.
