11th July 2024 – (Hong Kong) A bus driver in Sha Tin was promptly dismissed by the bus company for driving in the wrong direction. A video clip captured by a dashboard camera has gone viral, showing an empty bus without a displayed route travelling along Ngau Pei Sha Street. At around 7.10am yesterday (10th), the bus briefly stopped at the intersection opposite Yu Chui Shopping Centre before making a sudden left turn into the opposite lane of Yu Chui Shopping Centre, narrowly avoiding a collision with a motorcyclist. Although the video clip lacks audio, it does show the motorcyclist repeatedly gesturing towards the bus, presumably expressing dissatisfaction or hurling insults.
In response to inquiries, the bus company confirmed that on Wednesday morning (10th) at around 7am, a non-passenger bus mistakenly entered the opposing lane at the junction of Ngau Pei Sha Street and Yu Chui Shopping Centre. Following an investigation, the bus company swiftly terminated the employment of the driver involved. Emphasizing their unwavering commitment to road safety, the bus company stated that they will not tolerate any form of dangerous driving behaviour.
The incident involving an empty bus without a displayed route driving in the wrong direction and entering Yu Chui Shopping Centre’s opposing lane has drawn significant criticism from netizens. Comments such as “Buses nowadays are so chaotic!” and “Can they just drive against traffic when they make a wrong turn?” flooded social media platforms. Some users even made sarcastic remarks, jokingly stating, “Wow, the bus driver seems completely detached from reality. Impressive!” and questioning, “Doesn’t the bus have a reverse function?”
