19th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) Residents of Wah Oi House in Wah Kwai Estate, Aberdeen, are facing significant disruptions as the building experienced its third power outage in just ten days on 19th January. The latest blackout occurred around 1am, prompting concerns among occupants who reported a lack of assistance from property management and the housing authority.
At around 4am, the lobby was shrouded in darkness, illuminated only by temporary lighting. While some residents indicated that their individual units had regained power, corridor lights remained inoperative.
This string of outages began on 9th January when a fire in the electricity meter room caused an initial blackout. Then, on 12th January, power was temporarily cut from the fifth to the twentieth floors due to a circuit breaker issue. Local district councillors revealed that the management company had informed them that Wah Oi House was still relying on a temporary electrical supply, which could not support the building’s maximum load.
During the earlier outage, residents faced not only a loss of electricity but also a shortage of potable water, prompting the Water Supplies Department to dispatch water trucks for emergency supply. As frustration mounts among residents, many are calling for urgent action to address the ongoing power issues and restore reliable services.
