13th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A 24-year-old woman holding a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passport has returned to Hong Kong following a harrowing experience that began when she went missing after claiming she was in Thailand for a part-time job. Her mother later confirmed that the young woman had fallen victim to human trafficking, with perpetrators demanding a ransom of US$28,000 (approximately HK$220,000) for her release.

The woman’s plight came to light on social media, where a user posted an appeal for information after the young woman lost contact shortly after arriving in Bangkok on 27th December. Her mother disclosed on a television programme that her daughter was reportedly sold into a trafficking operation along the Thai-Myanmar border. The kidnappers promised to release her once the ransom was paid, asserting that they would escort her to the airport for her return home.

Concerned that payment might not guarantee her daughter’s freedom, the mother sought assistance from the Hong Kong Immigration Department and local police, but reported no significant progress. She eventually turned to an intermediary to facilitate the negotiation for her daughter’s release. However, the terms frequently changed, with the kidnappers insisting on payment before releasing the young woman.

On 11th January, the mother shared the news of her daughter’s safe return on social media, expressing gratitude for the support received from many strangers. The Hong Kong Security Bureau later confirmed that the young woman had indeed returned home. When asked about the details of her rescue, the mother revealed that a private rescue team had played a crucial role in extricating her daughter from the scam operation.
