According to Ms Yang, her brother’s girlfriend woke around 3am to find him convulsing. Despite the swift arrival of paramedics, they were unable to save him, suggesting a possible brain haemorrhage.
The following day, the family approached the homicide division of the local police to investigate the cause of death. Preliminary findings from the coroner indicated that Mr Yang might have suffocated due to overeating, which blocked his airway. Ms Yang suspects that her brother’s recent month of night shifts could have contributed to his condition, prompting the family to request an autopsy for a clearer understanding of the circumstances.
Describing her brother’s routine, Ms Yang explained that he had moved to Huizhou with his girlfriend for work in an electronics factory, often working night shifts. On the night in question, after a month of nocturnal hours and a few days of daytime shifts, he had a claypot rice takeaway ordered by his girlfriend after his shift. Following the meal, he played video games briefly before heading to bed.
In the early hours, his girlfriend became alarmed by his laboured breathing and discolouration. She immediately called for an ambulance, but by the time help arrived, he had already lost consciousness. Police investigations ruled out foul play.
Ms Yang expressed her disbelief regarding the coroner’s assertion that overeating was the cause of death, questioning how a relatively small takeaway could lead to such a tragic outcome. She emphasised that her brother was generally healthy, with no pre-existing conditions, and had not consumed alcohol. Some online commentators have speculated that overwork may have played a role in his untimely demise.
