13th January 2025 – (Kyiv) Approximately 300 North Korean soldiers have been reported killed and 2,700 injured while participating in Russia’s conflict with Ukraine, as revealed by a South Korean lawmaker on Monday. Referring to information from Seoul’s intelligence agency, the lawmaker disclosed that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had purportedly dispatched over 10,000 troops as “cannon fodder” to support Moscow in its battle against Kyiv in exchange for technical assistance for North Korea’s heavily sanctioned weapons and satellite programs.
Over the weekend, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the capture of two North Korean soldiers, sharing video footage of the wounded combatants undergoing interrogation, raising the prospect of a potential prisoner exchange for detained Ukrainian troops.
Lawmaker Lee Seong-kweun disclosed that the deployment of North Korean troops has expanded to the Kursk region, with estimates indicating casualties exceeding 3,000, including around 300 fatalities and 2,700 injuries. These soldiers, believed to be from North Korea’s elite Storm Corps, have reportedly been instructed to take their own lives rather than face capture.
Memoranda discovered on deceased soldiers suggest that North Korean authorities pressured them to commit suicide or self-detonate before being apprehended, Lee noted. Some soldiers sought “amnesty” or expressed a desire to join the Workers’ Party of North Korea, aiming to enhance their circumstances through combat.
Lee also highlighted instances where North Korean soldiers, lacking modern warfare knowledge, have been utilised by Russia in ways leading to a significant number of casualties.
