15th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A 32-year-old woman has been arrested in Hong Kong on suspicion of conspiring to defraud individuals into travelling to Southeast Asia for scam operations. This development comes amid a resurgence of human trafficking and fraud linked to a network operating along the Myanmar-Thailand border, which has reportedly ensnared at least 28 Hong Kong residents, with 12 still unaccounted for.
Under Secretary for Security, Mr Michael Cheuk, led a government team to Thailand to coordinate rescue efforts with local authorities. The team has confirmed that 11 Hong Kong individuals are currently detained in the border region of Myanmar, while one is held in Cambodia. The alarming trend of scams targeting vulnerable individuals has prompted increased scrutiny and intervention from the Hong Kong authorities.
The woman in custody is believed to have played a pivotal role in luring victims through social media platforms, promising high salaries with minimal experience required. Many of those deceived received electronic tickets to Thailand, only to find themselves coerced into illicit activities upon arrival.
The authorities are emphasising the importance of protective measures and community vigilance to prevent further victimisation. A press conference is scheduled for later today, where police will provide additional details regarding the arrest and ongoing investigations.
