4th January 2025 – (Izu) A 63-year-old woman from Hong Kong was involved in a shocking accident while on a self-driving tour in Japan, reportedly mistaking the accelerator for the brake. The incident occurred on 4th January at approximately 1.30pm in Izu, Shizuoka Prefecture, where she crashed her vehicle into a soba noodle shop, resulting in injuries to two patrons.
According to local media, the accident unfolded as the woman attempted to park her vehicle in the shop’s lot. Instead, she inadvertently accelerated into the restaurant, severely injuring a 42-year-old female customer who suffered a broken leg and required hospitalization. Another diner sustained minor injuries when startled and struck her head.
Authorities reported that the driver admitted to confusing the pedals, leading to the unexpected collision on the first day of the shop’s reopening after the New Year holiday. Footage from the scene showed significant damage to the shop’s entrance, with shattered glass and debris scattered throughout.
The shop owner described the moment of impact, stating, “It sounded like a rocket crashing in, and I saw glass flying everywhere. I was truly shocked and felt utterly helpless.”
