11th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) The recent case of Chinese actor Wang Xing, who was taken to Myanmar and held captive, has raised alarm among Hong Kong residents, leading to the cancellation of a concert by local star Eason Chan over safety concerns. Adding to the unease, a 24-year-old woman from Hong Kong has also been reported missing in Thailand. The Immigration Department had previously received a request for assistance from her family, and authorities have confirmed that she has now returned to Hong Kong.
Andy Yu Tak-po, former Vice Chairman of the Yau Tsim Mong District Council, who has been assisting families of individuals held captive, noted that he has received another request for help, bringing the total number of cases he is dealing with to seven.
Reports indicate that the young woman went missing after arriving in Bangkok at the end of last month and was briefly held illegally. Upon receiving the family’s plea for help, authorities coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, providing appropriate advice and assistance as per the family’s wishes.
Yu provided updates on social media regarding the situation of Hong Kong residents needing help. After submitting a letter to the Thai Consulate in Hong Kong, he reported that officials contacted him the following day to request details about six individuals who had been illegally detained, including information about their arrival at Thai airports and flight details. This information was submitted to the Thai Consulate on 10th January.
As of 31st December, the government had received 26 requests for assistance, with 13 cases still reporting restrictions on personal freedom. Yu stated that this figure reflects an increase from the previous announcement of 12 cases. He urged residents travelling to Southeast Asia for work or solo travel to exercise extra caution.
Thailand remains a popular travel destination for Hong Kong residents, with government data indicating that 660,000 visited the country in the first nine months of 2024. However, recent events have significantly impacted the Thai tourism industry, prompting the Thai government and its consulate in Hong Kong to offer support to the families of affected individuals.
