7th May 2024 – (Hong Kong) Apple is reportedly in the process of developing its own chip specifically designed to power artificial intelligence (AI) software in data centres, as revealed by sources familiar with the matter to the Wall Street Journal on Monday.
The tech giant has been grappling with its AI capabilities, trailing behind its competitors in this rapidly evolving field. Questions regarding Apple’s plans for AI have been met with evasive responses thus far.
“We remain extremely optimistic about our prospects in generative AI and are making substantial investments,” stated Apple CEO Tim Cook in an interview with Reuters.
Internally referred to as Project ACDC (Apple Chips in Data Centre), the initiative aims to capitalise on Apple’s extensive expertise in chip design to enhance its server infrastructure, according to the report.
While Project ACDC has been in progress for several years, it remains uncertain whether or not the project will be officially unveiled and when it might happen, as per the newspaper’s sources.
Regarding Apple’s server chip, the focus is expected to centre on executing AI models, commonly referred to as inference, rather than training AI models, the report added.
The move towards developing an in-house AI chip aligns with Apple’s strategy to exert greater control over its hardware and software ecosystem. By creating their own dedicated chip for AI, Apple can tailor it to meet the specific demands of their data centres, potentially enhancing the efficiency and performance of AI-driven tasks.
