16th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A 32-year-old beautician, Pun Sum-yi, appeared in court today to face serious allegations of luring two young women into a Myanmar-based scam operation under the pretext of lucrative job opportunities in Thailand. The case took place at the Shatin Magistrates’ Courts, where the defendant displayed visible signs of anxiety throughout the proceedings.

Pun is accused of conspiring to commit fraud by falsely claiming that the women, aged 21 and 23, could secure high-paying jobs in Thailand. The alleged scheme is part of a troubling resurgence of human trafficking operations in the region, with police reports indicating that at least 28 Hong Kong residents have been tricked into working in scam centres across the Myanmar-Thailand border, and twelve of them are still trapped.

During the hearing, the prosecution requested an adjournment until 13th March to allow for further investigation, while Pun’s application for bail was denied, necessitating her continued detention. She was represented by legal counsel and, dressed in a black jacket, she frequently glanced around the courtroom, appearing tense as she awaited the judge’s decisions.

The 32-year-old suspect was arrested by the police, who subsequently showcased evidence at a press conference yesterday. Among the items displayed was a notable DIOR handbag adorned with a Donald Duck charm, which caught the attention of netizens who deemed it to be quite valuable. According to information from the official DIOR website, this particular handbag retails for HK$26,500 and is designed by the brand’s creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri.
