12th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A massive hill fire continues to rage near the Kai Kung Leng area in Yuen Long, with firefighters struggling to extinguish the flames that have persisted for over ten hours. As of 4.10am today, two fire lines measuring 100 and 200 metres were clearly visible from Tai Mo Shan.
Nearby, the Big Tree Animal Sanctuary and Adoption Centre, which shelters over a hundred abandoned cats and dogs, is on high alert as the fire approaches. Volunteers from the sanctuary have expressed their concerns online, stating, “The flames are getting closer, and the firefighters are on site — we hope for their safety.”
Images from the scene show volunteers and firefighters standing by, ready to respond to any emergencies. The volunteers are currently securing all animals in cages and covering them with tarpaulins to ensure their safety.
The fire was first reported yesterday at approximately 5.31pm, with initial flames spanning around 80 metres. Despite the firefighters’ efforts, the blaze has intensified, extending to two lines of approximately 300 metres by 10.10pm. As of 1.44am today, the fire lines had further grown to 200 metres and 500 metres.
Photos taken during the night reveal the fierce flames illuminating the mountainside, with thick smoke rising into the air. Residents in Yuen Long, over five kilometres away, have reported smelling the acrid scent of burning ash.
As the situation develops, the Big Tree Animal Sanctuary remains vigilant, hoping for a swift resolution to the fire threat while prioritising the safety of its vulnerable residents.
