14th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) Preply, the online language learning platform, has released the findings of its latest survey, which indicates that nearly half of Hong Kongers view the British accent as the most attractive foreign accent when speaking English. The survey, which included 1,000 respondents, also highlighted the allure of the French and American accents, ranking them as the second and third most popular choices.
The survey results demonstrate a strong sense of local pride, with the Hong Kong accent being identified as the most appealing Asian accent, securing the second position overall. The Japanese accent followed closely behind, ranking third, while the Singaporean accent came in fourth.
According to the survey, 49.8% of participants selected the British accent as the sexiest, while 31.0% favoured the French accent and 28.4% preferred the American accent. The Hong Kong accent was chosen by 43.1% of respondents as the most captivating Asian accent, ahead of the Japanese accent at 22.3% and the Singaporean accent at 15.9%.
The preferences were largely consistent across genders, with approximately 50% of both men and women opting for the British accent. However, a notable distinction emerged regarding the Hong Kong accent: only 35.6% of women selected it compared to 48.9% of men. Women showed a stronger inclination towards Western accents, with the French, American, and Italian accents also featuring prominently in their top choices.
The survey revealed that certain accents pose comprehension challenges for Hongkongers. A significant 40.6% of respondents reported difficulties understanding the Indian accent, followed by 24.9% for the Japanese accent, 19.9% for the Pakistani accent, and 14.5% for the Chinese accent. In contrast, accents such as American, British, and Hong Kong were easily comprehended by the majority.
Interestingly, over 30% of Hong Kongers admitted to forming opinions about colleagues based on their accents, with Gen Z respondents particularly likely to make these accent-based judgments. Additionally, 64.2% expressed a desire to become fluent in Japanese, followed by Korean at 42.0% and Cantonese at 24.3%.
