14th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) At approximately 1.54pm today, a 64-year-old woman, identified as Ng, was accosted by a male assailant who snatched her handbag shortly after she withdrew HK$20,000 from an ATM at Bank Centre.

Witnesses intervened promptly, subduing the suspect and alerting the authorities. Police arrived on the scene to discover counterfeit currency hidden in the suspect’s clothing, leading to his arrest on charges of robbery and possession of fake notes.

The suspect, a 40-year-old man named Kwok, reportedly claimed to have consumed “space oil,” a narcotic substance that the Hong Kong government plans to designate as a dangerous drug effective 14th February. Both the victim and the assailant were sent to Kwong Wah Hospital for treatment; Ng sustained injuries during the incident, while Kwok exhibited signs of distress.

Reports indicate that after withdrawing cash, Ng was followed for approximately 100 metres before the robbery took place outside Wai Fung Plaza. In addition to the handbag theft, officers discovered 21 counterfeit notes, each with a face value of HK$500, totalling HK$10,500.
