17th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A group of campers has drawn significant backlash after spreading their extensive camping gear across an MTR carriage, obstructing the doors and hindering other passengers. The incident, which was shared in the Facebook group “Tuen Mun Friends,” featured photographs captioned with “Taking the subway can be quite chill now. Bringing all camping gear, utilising the space.”
In the images, a cheerful group surrounded by backpacks and camping mats appeared to be enjoying a lively selfie session. However, the reality was less festive, as the scene unfolded in a crowded train carriage, with their belongings scattered and some campers seated in a way that blocked the doors, disrupting the flow of boarding and alighting passengers.
Netizens were quick to express their discontent, with comments highlighting the selfishness of the campers. One user identified the location as the East Rail Line, lamenting, “Is this really acceptable?” Many others echoed similar sentiments, questioning the consideration of the campers towards fellow travellers. Comments ranged from “blocking the door is selfish” to “do they not think about other passengers’ needs?”
The uproar intensified as more images surfaced on social media, showing a broader view of the crowded carriage, juxtaposed with the campers’ makeshift setup. Observers noted that the scene resembled a chaotic gathering rather than a responsible use of public transportation.
Some users suggested notifying the train conductor to address the disruption, with others jokingly proposing mischievous solutions, such as tossing some of the gear out at the next station. This incident has sparked a wider conversation about etiquette and awareness within public spaces, highlighting the delicate balance between personal enjoyment and communal responsibility.
