5th September 2024 – (Hong Kong) The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has charged a private cello instructor, Ho Ka-yeung, with fraudulently misleading a student’s parent during the purchase of a cello. The incident, which allegedly involved concealing the true price and discount, is said to have resulted in a profit of over HK$6,000 for the instructor.

Ho, 30, has been granted bail and is set to appear in the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts on Friday, 6th September.

Investigations initiated by the ICAC followed a complaint regarding potential corruption. According to the findings, between July and August 2023, Ho recommended that a parent purchase a new cello for their son to prepare for an upcoming music examination. He claimed that a discount could be obtained from Chairman Instruments Trading Limited.

Subsequently, Ho accompanied the parent to the store to facilitate the purchase. It is alleged that he misrepresented the cello’s price as HK$ 24,300 after applying a discount. However, ICAC’s investigation revealed that the actual sale price to Ho was only HK$18,000, a detail he failed to disclose to the parent. This arrangement allowed him to profit from the transaction without the parent’s knowledge.
