29th July 2023 – (Hong Kong) John Lee, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, concluded his visit to three ASEAN countries yesterday evening in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. The visit aimed to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties between Hong Kong and the ASEAN region. However, there have been reports that anonymous U.S. officials have revealed that Hong Kong’s Chief Executive will not be invited to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) informal leaders’ meeting in the United States at the end of this year due to sanctions.

In response to the reports, Lee stated that APEC has its own guidelines, customary practices, and rules, and it is the responsibility of the host country or economy to invite representatives of other member economies to participate in the meeting and provide the necessary convenience for the participants. The Hong Kong government will attend the relevant meetings according to the guidelines, customary practices, and rules of APEC, and he hopes that the APEC organizers will arrange the meeting according to these guidelines, customary practices, and rules as well.

The US government has imposed sanctions on several Hong Kong officials and entities in response to the national security law imposed by Beijing on the city. The law has been criticised as a violation of Hong Kong’s autonomy and civil liberties. The sanctions include travel bans and asset freezes, and they have been criticised by the Hong Kong government as an interference in China’s internal affairs.
