7th April 2023 – (Beijing) The Chinese commerce ministry expressed its dissatisfaction with Australia’s decision to ban TikTok on federal government devices, calling it a “discriminatory restrictive measure.” In a statement posted on its website on Friday, the ministry argued that the move would not contribute to safeguarding Australia’s national security, but would instead undermine international confidence in the country’s business environment and harm the interests of Australian enterprises and its people.
The Chinese government has consistently encouraged enterprises to conduct international operations in line with market principles and international economic and trade rules, while complying with the laws and regulations of the host country, according to the ministry. It emphasized the importance of treating all enterprises fairly and equitably, providing them with an open, transparent, and non-discriminatory business environment.
The ministry further highlighted the need to create a favourable economic and trade cooperation environment between China and Australia. It urged the Australian side to reconsider its ban on TikTok and take measures to rectify the discriminatory treatment of Chinese enterprises.
