31st July 2023 – (Beijing) China has announced export controls on some drone-related equipment, including drone engines, lasers, communication equipment, and anti-drone systems, which will take effect from 1st September. The restrictions come amid escalating tensions with the United States over access to technology and are aimed at safeguarding national security and interests, according to the Chinese commerce ministry.

China is home to a large drone manufacturing industry and exports drones to several markets, including the United States. Chinese-based company DJI is the most popular drone used by public safety agencies in the U.S., with over 50% of drones sold in the country made by the company.

The US has previously restricted China’s access to key technologies, such as chipmaking equipment, leading to China’s own export controls on some metals used in chipmaking. China’s commerce ministry has also accused U.S. and Western media of spreading unfounded accusations that China was exporting drones to the battlefield in Ukraine, calling the reports an attempt to smear Chinese firms.
