1st August 2024 – (Beijing) China’s railway network recorded a surge in passenger travel during the first half of the 2024 summer travel rush, with 423 million trips made in July, data from the China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. showed on Thursday.

The figure represents a 4% increase from the same period last year, with the average daily number of railway passenger trips reaching 13.63 million in July. The robust travel demand is driven by strong student travel, tourism and family visits during the summer vacation season, which runs from 1st July to 31st August.

“Since the start of the 2024 summer vacation, demand for student travel, tourism and family visits has been strong, keeping railway passenger flow at a high level,” the company said in a statement.

Despite facing extreme weather conditions, such as floods, the railway operator said it has successfully secured the transportation of goods and passengers, and worked hard to ensure summer passenger transportation and the delivery of key materials for people’s livelihood, thereby providing solid support for both passenger travel and economic operation.

The summer travel rush is typically a busy season for China’s railway system, as college students return home for the summer break and families embark on vacation trips. This year’s summer travel rush is no exception, with the railway network playing a crucial role in facilitating the movement of people across the country.

“The surge in railway passenger trips during the summer travel rush is a testament to the resilience and efficiency of China’s railway network,” said a spokesperson for the China State Railway Group. “We are committed to providing safe, reliable and comfortable transportation services to meet the growing demand for travel during this peak season.”
