12th January 2025 – (Beijing) According to an expert from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), there are currently no emerging infectious diseases in China. The existing respiratory infections are attributable to known pathogens.
Wang Liping, a research fellow at the China CDC, stated at a press conference held by the National Health Commission that influenza is the predominant cause behind patient visits to healthcare facilities for acute respiratory infections. The data indicates that influenza intensity remains moderate across most provinces. With middle and primary schools entering their winter holidays, a decline in influenza activity is expected by mid to late January.
Wang also noted that human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been circulating among humans for decades. The recent increase in reported cases is largely due to improvements in detection technologies.
The expert reassured that the overall intensity of respiratory infectious diseases and the associated medical pressures this year will not surpass those experienced last year.
