4th January 2025 – (Beijing) China is set to kick off a month-long online shopping festival in anticipation of the upcoming Spring Festival, which falls on 29th January this year. Organised by the Ministry of Commerce and supported by various government departments and the China Consumers Association, the event will take place from 7th January to 5th February.
This initiative marks the first nationwide online sales promotion since the inscription of the “Spring Festival, social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of traditional new year” on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2024. The aim is to cater to consumers’ festive shopping needs while promoting traditional Chinese culture and bolstering e-commerce sales.
A launch ceremony will be held on 7th January in Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province, featuring activities such as displays of festive goods and exhibitions focused on intangible cultural heritage. Various regions across China and e-commerce platforms will host unique events to mark the Spring Festival, including local product promotions and cultural exhibitions.
Notably, from 22nd January, Shanghai will host a Silk Road e-commerce Spring Festival event aimed at promoting tourism products for visitors coming to China for the celebrations. Additionally, festive goods will be available on global versions of popular e-commerce platforms to cater to the needs of overseas Chinese and international customers.
