CityU PhD student Victor Tuzov among three foreign nationals who died in Bangkok hotel fire

4th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A devastating fire broke out at The Ember Hotel near Khaosan Road in Bangkok on the evening of 29th December, resulting in the tragic deaths of three foreign nationals and injuries to seven others. Among the deceased was Victor Tuzov, a Ukrainian PhD student from the Media and Communication department at City University of Hong Kong (CityU), as confirmed by the university’s research group, The Babak Lab, on 2nd January.

The incident occurred around 9.21pm on the fifth floor of the six-storey hotel located on Tanee Road. Eyewitnesses reported that firefighters arrived swiftly and managed to control the blaze approximately one hour later. The fire claimed the life of a foreign woman on the fifth floor, while two foreign men were severely injured and later succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Reports indicate that the deceased included a Brazilian woman, a Ukrainian man, and an American man.

The Babak Lab described Tuzov as a talented and skilled journalist, noting his unique perspective in covering stories about CityU scholars and professors in the field of bioinorganic chemistry, providing invaluable and profound reports.

In response to the tragedy, CityU expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to Tuzov’s family. The university is currently in contact with the family and is committed to providing all necessary assistance.

Victor Tuzov, who had previously studied journalism at Lomonosov Moscow State University in Russia and later pursued a Master’s degree in Journalism at Shanghai International Studies University, was enrolled in the PhD programme at CityU in 2020.
