17th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) Residents of Tai Po rallied to support a local herbal tea shop owner, Kuen, after she fell victim to a theft that cost her two months’ worth of earnings. The incident occurred on 13th January, around 6.30pm when Kuen discovered her handbag missing while preparing to close her shop on On Fu Road. Inside the bag were several thousand dollars in cash, her identity card, an Octopus card, and her mobile phone.

Kuen expressed her shock, stating, “I turned around and suddenly there was no one there.” The loss was particularly devastating as the funds were earmarked for much-needed repairs to the ageing shop.

Upon learning of Kuen’s predicament, the owner of a nearby butcher shop swiftly took action. He placed an order for tea and shared the story online, which quickly garnered attention. The response was overwhelming, with many customers stepping in to make purchases, some ordering as many as 70 bottles of tea in one go.

Kuen was visibly moved by the outpouring of support, saying, “My heart feels much lighter. I’m glad to earn a little something for the New Year… now I can’t keep up with the orders.”

To enhance security, Kuen’s son announced plans to install closed-circuit television cameras in the shop. Meanwhile, the police have registered the incident as a case of theft, following a report made at 9.05pm. by a man whose 61-year-old mother was robbed of her handbag, which contained her identity card, Octopus card, approximately HK$3,900 in cash, and a mobile phone.
