7th January 2025 – (Washington) On 6th January, the U.S. Congress officially certified Donald Trump as the victor of the 2024 presidential election, a significant event occurring four years after his supporters stormed the Capitol in an effort to overturn the 2020 results.
Despite a winter storm and heightened security, with imposing black fences surrounding the Capitol, both the House of Representatives and the Senate gathered for a joint session to formalise Trump’s election. Current Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost to Trump in the previous election, presided over the proceedings, presenting the electoral vote counts from each state and the District of Columbia.
The final tally revealed that Trump secured 312 electoral votes, comfortably exceeding the 270 required for victory, while Harris garnered 226 votes. Although the counting of electoral votes is typically a ceremonial affair, the shadow of the Capitol riot loomed large, as it had occurred on the same date four years prior.
Following his defeat in the 2020 election, Trump alleged widespread electoral fraud, leading to the 6th January, 2021, insurrection, which resulted in five fatalities and injuries to hundreds of police officers. Over 1,500 individuals have since faced federal charges related to the violence.
Amid ongoing concerns regarding potential post-election unrest, a POLITICO-Morning Consult poll indicated that 60% of voters are apprehensive about the possibility of a repeat of the January 6 events following the upcoming election.
Donald Trump is set to be inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States on 20th January, marking the start of his second, nonconsecutive term.
