2nd October 2024 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Observatory has reported that a strong northeast monsoon is currently affecting the Guangdong coast, leading to slightly cooler temperatures across the region this morning. Most areas in Hong Kong experienced temperatures that were four to five degrees lower than those recorded yesterday, with urban minimums reaching around 22 degrees Celsius.
As of 10am, Severe Typhoon Krathon was located approximately 150 kilometres southwest of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and is expected to move slowly north-northeast towards the southern part of the island.
Residents can expect a dry day with sunny intervals, accompanied by fresh northerly winds. Winds will be particularly strong offshore, reaching gale force on high ground.
In the next few days, the weather is anticipated to remain mainly fine and dry, with mornings and nights becoming slightly cooler, maintaining minimum temperatures around 22 degrees. The temperature difference between day and night will be relatively pronounced. Winds will continue to be strong tomorrow as the influence of the northeast monsoon persists.
Looking ahead, the monsoon is expected to continue affecting southern China, leading to generally fine and dry weather in the middle and latter parts of this week. Another replenishment of the northeast monsoon is anticipated early next week, while a broad trough of low pressure may bring showers to the central and southern regions of the South China Sea by midweek.
Additionally, Tropical Cyclone Krathon is projected to move across Taiwan on Thursday, gradually weakening as it progresses. Residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates as conditions develop.
