15th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) has secured a court order to close a premises in Kowloon Bay that has been operating as an unlicensed restaurant since 2019. The establishment, located at Unit 1B2, Ground Floor, Fook Hong Industrial Building, 19 Sheung Yuet Road, has been the subject of 76 prosecutions for violating food business regulations.
A spokesperson for the FEHD stated that despite persistent enforcement actions, the restaurant continued to operate illegally. The department sought the closure order under the Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance (Cap. 132) to address the ongoing violations of the Food Business Regulation (Cap. 132X). The closure order will take effect on 23rd January, following its official posting at the premises.
Under the Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance, entering or remaining on closed premises without written permission from the FEHD is an offence, punishable by a maximum fine of $100,000, a year of imprisonment, and a daily fine of $1,750.
The FEHD reiterated its commitment to combating unlicensed food operations to protect public health and food safety. The department urged operators to comply with the law and encouraged the public to refrain from patronising unlicensed establishments.
Licensed food businesses are required to display their licences prominently. A list of such licensed premises is available on the FEHD’s website. The public can report suspected unlicensed food operations by contacting the FEHD hotline at 2868 0000.
