10th January 2025 – (Copenhagen) The Danish government has reached out to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump for a phone conversation following his controversial comments regarding Greenland. However, no official response has yet been received, according to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who spoke at a press conference late Thursday.
During a meeting prior to the conference, leaders from all political parties in the Folketing, Denmark’s Parliament, were updated on ongoing diplomatic efforts in response to Trump’s statement that he would not rule out military action to assert control over Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory.
Frederiksen stated that there is currently no reason to believe Trump would act on his remarks. Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen added, “We should take him seriously, but not literally.”
The Prime Minister also disclosed that informal discussions with the incoming U.S. administration have commenced since Trump’s election victory in November, expressing hope for further dialogue following his official inauguration.
However, discontent has surfaced among political parties following the briefing. The Danish People’s Party has called for clearer policies regarding Greenland’s autonomy, while the left-wing Red-Green Alliance has criticised the government’s approach as overly accommodating towards the United States.
Greenland, the world’s largest island with a population of approximately 60,000, was a Danish colony until 1953 when it became an integral part of Denmark, granting its inhabitants Danish citizenship. In 1979, Greenland achieved home rule, allowing for increased self-governance while remaining under Denmark’s jurisdiction for foreign and defence policy.
