12th January 2025 – (Tokyo) Japanese cybersecurity firm has reported that distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks have struck 46 companies and organisations across Japan. Trend Micro disclosed its findings on Sunday, revealing that the attacks occurred between 27th December and 9th January.

The firm identified and analysed networks known as botnets, which are believed to have been instrumental in executing the DDoS attacks. This method involves overwhelming websites or servers with massive volumes of data, ultimately causing them to crash. Significant Japanese corporations, including Japan Airlines, MUFG Bank, and NTT Docomo, were among those affected, experiencing system glitches and disruptions in access to their websites.

Katsuyuki Okamoto of Trend Micro noted that while the precise motives behind the attacks remain unclear, they could potentially serve as a precursor to more extensive cyber operations, possibly aimed at surveillance. This development raises concerns about the vulnerability of critical infrastructure in Japan and the broader implications for cybersecurity in the region.
