1st August 2024 – (Beijing) Central China has been devastated by severe flooding, with state media reporting that at least 30 people have been killed and 35 are still missing in the wake of days of torrential rain earlier this week.

According to state broadcaster CCTV, the hardest-hit area was Zixing city, where “the roads, electricity and communications in eight towns that were most severely affected by Typhoon Gaemi have basically opened.” The initial findings from local authorities indicate that 30 people have died and 35 remain unaccounted for.

The extreme weather conditions have caused widespread disruption across the region, with infrastructure severely damaged and communications networks disrupted. Rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing, as authorities work to account for those still missing and provide aid to affected communities.

“The torrential rain and flooding have had a devastating impact on central China,” said a spokesman for the local government. “Our immediate priority is to secure the safety of residents, restore essential services, and begin the process of rebuilding and recovery.”

Typhoon Gaemi, which made landfall in China earlier this week, has been blamed for the intense rainfall and flooding that has ravaged the region. The storm system has also affected other parts of the country, with reports of widespread damage and displacement.
