Department of Health warns public against dental service registration scams

7th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) The Department of Health (DH) today has issued a warning to the public regarding potential scams, following reports that individuals are promoting online services to register others for public dental services through the Online Registration System for the Dental General Public Session (ORDGP) in exchange for payment.

In response, the DH has increased staffing to assist those needing help with registration for the ORDGP, collaborating with various district networks to provide free support to the community. They emphasised that the ORDGP operates fairly and equitably, stating that no one can enhance their chances of obtaining a service quota by having someone register on their behalf.

A DH spokesperson clarified, “The ORDGP only accepts registrations under real names, requiring individuals to fill in their personal details, including their name and identity document number. Each person may only register once per day. The computer ballot is automated, and service quotas are non-transferable. Therefore, paying someone for registration will not improve one’s chances of securing a quota.”

The DH strongly advises individuals not to divulge personal information by entrusting strangers online for ORDGP registration to prevent unnecessary financial losses. Those who suspect they have fallen victim to the reported “lottery gang” scams should promptly report the matter to the police.

To assist the public further, the DH has mobilised additional resources for registration support. Anyone needing help can visit any dental clinic offering the dental general public session between 8.30am and 11.30am for free assistance. Additionally, individuals can log into the ORDGP to check ballot results after 12.30pm on the ballot day or call the hotline at 2892 2111 from 9am to 5pm during office hours.

Following the computer ballot, successful applicants will receive notification via SMS. They must present their original identity documents used for registration and attend the designated clinics in person at 8.30am on the service day. For easy identification, DH-issued SMS messages will include the ID “#DH-DENT GP,” and will not contain hyperlinks.
