8th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A group of ten diners in Central, Hong Kong, has sparked outrage after sharing their hefty seafood bill on social media. The total came to an eye-watering HK$11,269.50, with one fish alone costing HK$3,880—accounting for a third of the total bill. One member of the group expressed their disbelief at the exorbitant price, declaring, “I won’t be returning.”
After seeing the bill, many netizens were taken aback, with comments like, “That one meal costs what I earn in a month!” and “That’s incredibly expensive!” However, some recognised the restaurant as a well-known establishment in Central and argued that such prices are expected. “If you haven’t tried this restaurant before, why not give it a go? With a large group, you can share the cost and try various dishes,” one user suggested. Another added, “Sometimes, spending a bit more can be a worthwhile experience.”
In a post on Xiaohongshu, the diner shared a photo of the bill, which included several seafood dishes: the HK$3,880 common coral trout, HK$360 crispy fried fish fillets, HK$260 boiled yam, HK$850 charcoal-grilled goose, HK$680 pineapple prawn balls, and HK$900 for two portions of steamed egg whites.
Following the meal, the diner lamented, “We felt it was too expensive, so we won’t be going back,” also noting that they had not finished the pricey steamed egg dish.
The steep cost of the meal has ignited discussions online, with some users shocked by the prices, while others defend the restaurant’s reputation and suggest that the experience may justify the expense.
