Disturbing incident in Sheung Shui raises suicide and scamming concerns

12th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A distressing video circulating online on 12th January shows a man in white clothing unexpectedly running into the road on Ching Hiu Road in Sheung Shui before collapsing dramatically. The incident almost resulted in a collision, as a driver swerved to avoid hitting him, narrowly missing other vehicles.

The footage, which lasts approximately ten seconds, captures the moment at 4.28pm when a light goods vehicle was travelling along Ching Hiu Road near Ching Ho Estate. The driver reacted with alarm, exclaiming as he swerved, while a puzzled passenger asked, “Did we hit him?” to which the driver responded, “We did.”

Paramedics were alerted at the same time and discovered that the 43-year-old man had sustained injuries to his hand. He was subsequently taken to the hospital. Authorities reported that the individual had expressed feelings of despair, suggesting that he had attempted to take his own life by positioning himself in the roadway.

The incident has sparked speculation among netizens, with many questioning whether it was part of a “cash for crash” scam. Comments online included suggestions that it was a genuine suicide attempt, with one user remarking, “Is this a real suicide attack?” while others discussed the possibility of a scam operation.

Police are treating the case as a suspected suicide attempt and are investigating further.
