16th January 2025 – (Los Angeles) The ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles County, California, have escalated into a severe crisis, threatening approximately 6.5 million residents as reported by the National Weather Service on 15th January. With strong winds and low humidity complicating firefighting efforts, the situation remains dire.
Among those affected is Hong Kong celebrity Edison Chen, who took to social media to announce that his daughter Alaia’s school has been completely destroyed by the flames, necessitating urgent funds for reconstruction. In a heartfelt message posted on Instagram, Chen urged his supporters and fans to contribute, stating, “I ask all of you, my supporters, to donate to help Alaia and her classmates have a new school and a brighter future.”
As of 14th January, the wildfires have claimed at least 25 lives and are projected to result in economic damages ranging from $250 billion to $275 billion, surpassing the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, making it one of the most catastrophic natural disasters in American history.
Chen emphasised that not only his daughter’s school requires assistance, but many institutions across Southern California are in need of repair. “I would be incredibly grateful for any help you can provide; every dollar counts,” he added while sharing a link for donations. The funds will be directed towards rebuilding schools and homes for those whose lives have been irrevocably changed by the fires.
In a response to negative comments on his post, Chen defended his appeal, questioning the morality of those who would criticise in such a tragic context. He subsequently shared the individual’s photo, calling for their school to reconsider their employment.
On 16th January, Chen expressed his gratitude to all who have supported Alaia’s school through donations or prayers, stating that the Chen family will continue to assist the community and extend thanks to everyone helping victims of the Southern California wildfires.
