11th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A 70-year-old man faced wrongful accusations of theft while shopping at a grocery store in Hung Hom on 7th January. According to his daughter, employees alleged that he had failed to pay for sweet potato flour during a previous visit. They demanded a compensation of HK$3,200, threatening to report him to the police if he refused.
After his daughter received a distressing call from his wife, she rushed to the store to find her father being held. Despite their insistence on his innocence, the staff remained unyielding. The police arrived and reviewed CCTV footage, ultimately confirming that the elderly man had not stolen anything. However, during the ordeal, the couple was subjected to a three-hour wait without an apology from the store employees.
The daughter expressed her father’s distress, stating he suffered from elevated blood pressure and loss of appetite following the incident. She condemned the staff’s lack of remorse, warning others to be cautious to avoid similar situations.
Online reactions were swift, with many users commenting on the apparent exploitation of the elderly, suggesting that vulnerable individuals might be coerced into paying for false claims. Some even called for legal action against the store for what they perceived as unlawful detention.
