19th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A dashcam video of a man losing control of his electric bike has gone viral, showcasing a rather alarming incident that took place on Tung Lok Street in Yuen Long. The footage, lasting approximately 30 seconds, was recorded on the afternoon of 18th January at 5.31pm.
In the video, the rider can be seen waiting on the pavement before attempting to cross the street when no vehicles were present. However, as he tried to accelerate, something appeared to malfunction, causing the electric bike to lurch unexpectedly. The rider was thrown off and landed on the ground, fortunately without any passing vehicles that could have led to a more serious outcome. A woman on the pavement witnessed the incident and was visibly startled by the unfolding events.
While the extent of the rider’s injuries remains unclear, the incident has sparked a wave of comments online. Many netizens humorously suggested that the rider had inadvertently activated “Sport Mode” on his electric bike, while others remarked on the disconnect between the rider’s intentions and the actual performance of the vehicle.
Currently, the use of electric scooters, hoverboards, and similar devices is banned under the Road Traffic Ordinance. Offenders can face hefty fines of up to HK$10,000 or even imprisonment for up to one year. Data from the Transport Department reveals that police arrested 267 individuals for illegal use of electric mobility devices in 2023, up from 236 in 2022 and 207 in 2021.
