5th September 2024 – (Guangzhou) The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has escalated its emergency response for flood and typhoon prevention from Level III to Level II in Guangdong and Hainan provinces as Typhoon Yagi approaches. The announcement was made at 3pm on Thursday.
As of 2pmon Thursday, the eye of Typhoon Yagi, the 11th typhoon of the season, was located approximately 540 km southeast of Xuwen County in Guangdong. Meteorologists predict that Yagi will make landfall on Friday afternoon or evening, potentially affecting areas between Qionghai in Hainan and Maoming City in Guangdong.
In anticipation of the storm, both provinces are expected to experience severe rainstorms from Thursday through Sunday, with daily rainfall amounts projected to reach or exceed 500 mm in some areas. This extreme weather poses significant risks of flooding and landslides, prompting authorities to prepare for emergency measures.
China’s flood-control emergency-response system operates on a four-tier scale, with Level I representing the most severe response. The elevated alert reflects the seriousness of the situation as communities brace for the impact of Typhoon Yagi.
