16th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A 25-year-old man from Hong Kong has been successfully rescued from a notorious scam operation in Myanmar, where he was reportedly held captive and forced into online fraud. The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, arrived back in Hong Kong on 16th January after his family paid a ransom of HK$120,000. He had been trapped in a facility near the Thailand-Myanmar border for several months.

The Security Bureau’s Secretary, Chris Tang, confirmed the rescue on social media, stating that the individual was met at the airport by officials from the Bureau, police, and the Immigration Department. Former Yau Tsim Mong District Councillor, Andy Yu Tak-po, revealed that the victim’s family arranged for his release on 14th January.

According to Senior Superintendent Franky Cheung of the Organised Crime and Triad Bureau, the victim was lured through social media to transport diamonds to Taiwan, only to find himself caught in a web of deceit. Upon arriving in Bangkok, he was directed into a car and subsequently transferred through various vehicles until he reached the scam site. Once there, he was forced to partake in fraud activities, working up to 17 hours a day.

The situation has reignited concerns over the resurgence of such scams, which had seen at least 28 Hong Kong residents lured to these operations in recent months. The authorities have been actively collaborating with Thai officials and other departments to secure the release of additional victims still held captive.

Police investigations revealed that the scam operation had stringent security measures in place, with armed guards monitoring the premises. In a related case, a 32-year-old beautician was arrested for allegedly enticing two local women to join the operation under the guise of a free trip to Thailand.
