Farewell to former Education Secretary Michael Suen at requiem mass in Central

31st October 2024 – (Hong Kong) A requiem mass for Michael Suen Ming-yeung, the late former Secretary for Education, was held today at St. Joseph’s Church, drawing approximately 600 attendees, including prominent political figures and former colleagues. Suen passed away on 22nd October at the age of 80.

The mass was followed by a funeral procession to Cape Collinson Crematorium, where cremation will take place. In accordance with the family’s wishes, attendees were requested to forgo floral tributes and instead consider donations to the Hong Kong Tuberculosis, Chest and Heart Diseases Association or the Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society as a means of expressing condolences.

Among those in attendance were former Chief Executive Sir Donald Tsang, former Chief Secretary Anson Chan, and former Financial Secretary John Tsang, reflecting Suen’s significant impact on Hong Kong’s political landscape. Other notable attendees included Henry Tang, Andrew Leung, and current Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Erick Tsang.

Suen, who served as Secretary for Education from 2007 to 2012, was known for championing trilingual education in Hong Kong, advocating for the use of English, Cantonese, and Putonghua to enhance the city’s competitiveness. His career in public service began in 1966, spanning multiple roles including acting Chief Secretary for Administration.

The family expressed a desire for a simple farewell, emphasising Suen’s preference for modesty throughout his life. As investigations into his legacy continue, tributes poured in recognising his contributions to education and governance in Hong Kong.
