10th January 2025 – (Beijing) Hu Jian, a former top editor at Chinese state media, has secured a significant position within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, overseeing personnel decisions. This appointment reflects the ministry’s strategy to diversify its leadership beyond traditional diplomatic backgrounds.

The official announcement, made on Friday, reveals that Hu has been appointed as one of four deputy directors in the foreign ministry’s personnel department. At 46 years old, Hu brings a wealth of journalistic experience to his role, having previously worked for the Nanfang Daily Newspaper Group in Guangzhou, where he focused on domestic issues.

In his new capacity, Hu will manage the training and appointments of ministry officials, including overseeing the appointment and dismissal of diplomats stationed abroad, as well as the ministry’s commissioners in Hong Kong and Macau. This is his second position within the ministry, having previously served as deputy director in the department of press, communication, and Public Diplomacy since 2020.

While at the foreign ministry, Hu has advocated for enhancing the effectiveness of China’s narrative on the global stage, urging efforts to “debunk lies” propagated by Western nations about China. His prior experience and calls for improved communication strategies exemplify the ministry’s intention to utilise talent from various sectors.
