10th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) The cinema industry has faced significant challenges in 2024, with nine theatres announcing closures throughout the year, including two operated by Golden Harvest. The first to close was the Kai Tak cinema on 22nd April, followed by the Nam Cheong V Walk on 26th December. This difficult period appears to extend into 2025, with renewed concerns surrounding Golden Harvest cinemas.
Sources revealed that four more Golden Harvest cinemas are expected to cease operations this week. A review of the company’s website reveals that locations including The Sky at Olympian City, MegaBox in Kowloon Bay, StageE in Tuen Mun, and Galaxy Plaza in Shau Kei Wan are only offering tickets for Friday, 10th January, with no options available for future dates. Additionally, the Golden Harvest cinema app has been taken offline, indicating a pause in services.
Among the theatres, Galaxy Plaza, which began operations on 18th May, 2021, has the shortest history, serving the Eastern District of Hong Kong for just over three years. Meanwhile, the flagship Ocean Terminal cinema in Tsim Sha Tsui, which has been in operation since 1969, will provide limited service starting this Saturday, screening just one evening show.
